Google is adding a plethora of features to the Pixel Buds today that significantly expand their functionality. The most notable for many will likely be the new bass boost EQ, which should make the bass heads out there happy; this is accessible right from the device’s settings. A transcribe mode helps fulfill some of the Pixel Buds’ original promise as an in-ear translator. While the earbuds could already be used to aid in conversations between different languages, the new transcribe mode is arguably more useful....

If the news from a member of the preview program is correct, they are adding the automatic display of prices for tolls on roads and bridges to the driver navigation route. Google Maps invited the member to take a survey based on their UX of these features. It suggests that toll prices and perhaps total costs would be displayed along a driving route before the user selects it, allowing them to choose between faster and cheaper but longer routes....

So Google is changing things up. Starting November, it will display local ratings of an app on Android. Notably, local would mean the country your device and account are registered in. This move actually makes a whole lot of sense. Downloading a highly-rated app that features content from all over the world might sound like a safe bet, but it’s pretty useless if parts are blocked in your region. I can see the focus on local reviews save me time and valuable storage space as it’ll be easier to spot whether an app has enough localized information for my usage....

Specifically, Google says that “disruptive” ads are those that are displayed to users in “unexpected ways” such as when ads show up when you’re not actually using the device, or if you get a surprise full-screen ad when trying to make a phone call, unlocking your phone, or otherwise. Compared to Apple’s App Store, the Google Play Store is often seen as less secure; its app review process is less stringent than Apple’s, which is known to frequently deny new apps and updates....

AutoML is a tool from Google that automates the process of developing machine learning algorithms for various tasks. It’s user-friendly, fairly simple to use, and completely open-source. Best of all, Google’s always updating it. In its current iteration, AutoML has a few drawbacks. You still have to manually create and tune several algorithms to act as building blocks for the machine to get started. This allows it to take your work and experiment with new parameters in an effort to optimize what you’ve done....

The best part about the new app is that it also works offline. The Big G says Gallery Go will sort images based on the people or things you snap pics of. This ought to make it easy to quickly find selfies (or any other type of photos) and keep track of important documents. Gallery Go automatically labels images without using any data. It also supports SD cards so you can easily move files on and off your device....

One of my favorite features introduced with the Pixel 4 is Google’s Recorder app. It’s utterly barebones, save for one important feature: it automatically transcribes speech into text — usually quite effectively, too — making it incredibly useful for recordings of lectures, interviews, and other conversations you might want to write up. The problem was sharing these recordings with others became a bit of a pain, and even tranferring that text onto your own desktop was a multi-step process....
